Kaufman's Public Links Run Ends in Match Play Semifinals

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech golfer Kim Kaufman saw her run at the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship come to an end Friday as she fell to Ashlan Ramsey in the match play semifinals at the Neshanic Valley Golf Course in Neshanic Station, N.J.
In her fourth career Public Links Championship, the junior outlasted over 140 other players in what was the best finish of her still young amateur career. She had previously been eliminated in the first round of match play in each of her three previous appearances.
"Looking at it now, making the semifinals in a tournament such as this is a great accomplishment and one that not many players can say they've done," Kaufman said. "It was a long, brutal week as the weather was hot and humid and you're playing multiple matches a day, but I was able to go the farthest I have ever gone in an USGA event. I've learned a lot this week that will definitely benefit me in the future."
After opening the day with a quarterfinal victory over Chirapat Jao-Javanil, Kaufman fell just short against Ramsey, who survived a late rally to win by a single hole.
Kaufman trailed by two holes heading into the 17th and 18th before recording back-to-back birdies. Ramsey, however, sunk a birdie as well on the par-5 18th, ending Kaufman's shot at advancing to Saturday's 36-hole championship match.
The tournament-ending loss came just hours after Kaufman defeated Jao-Javanil, 2-and-1, in the quarterfinal round. The Clark, S.D. native led for all but five holes during the match thanks to a 3-under card that ended following 17 holes.
Kaufman will return to the links July 31-August 3 for the Royale Cup Canadian Amateur Championship held at the Lethbridge Country Club in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada.
