LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech head coach Adrian Gregory announced Friday that former All-Southland Conference selection Kirsten Schwirtlich has joined the Red Raider softball program for the start of preseason practices.
Schwirtlich, the 2013 Southland Conference Freshman of the Year, will be forced to sit out the 2015 season due to NCAA transfer rules after arriving at Tech following a two-year career at Houston Baptist.
The Corpus Christi, Texas native earned All-Southland Conference second team honors as a freshman at Houston Baptist in 2013 and then first team accolades the following year. She was also a third-team NFCA All-Region selection as a sophomore as well.
Her transfer will give Gregory additional depth in the infield both defensively and at the plate. Schwirtlich hit .366 as a freshman in 2013, connecting on a team-leading 10 home runs while driving in 47 runs. She committed only one defensive error that season in over 80 chances as well.
Schwirtlich followed up by compiling an impressive .411 average a year ago that once again featured impressive power numbers with nine home runs, 11 doubles, three triples and 38 RBI. She wrapped the season as the Southland Conference leader in batting average and among the league leaders in almost every other offensive category.
Schwirtlich totaled a combined .391 batting average during her two seasons which ranks among the school's all-time leaders. She also moved into the top 10 in the school record book with her 19 career home runs.
Schwirtlich signed with Houston Baptist after a successful prep career at Tuloso-Midway High School where she was an all-state honoree by the Texas Girls Coaches Association (TGCA) following both her junior and senior seasons.
The Red Raiders are just under three weeks from the start of the 2015 season as Tech will open the year with a Feb. 5 doubleheader against Montana and New Mexico State.
