FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- The usual suspects led the way for the No. 12 women's and No. 14 men's Texas Tech track & field teams at the Tyson Invitational, in Fayetteville, Ark., on Saturday.
In the men's high jump, Bradley Adkins matched his personal best with a clearance of 2.25m/7-4.5, to take second place. He has finished in first or second in each meet in which he has competed this season. JaCorian Duffield earned third place overall with a leap of 2.21m/7-3.0.
Tech picked up two solid finishes in the 200 meters, as Cierra White won her heat in an extremely quick 23.10, good enough for third place overall. On the men's side, Trevor Mackey placed ninth, with a collegiate-best 21.18.
In the men's shot put invitational, Kole Weldon had a season-best launch of 19.36m/63-6.25, which was good enough for fifth place in the event. Jerome Wilson placed 17th in the triple jump, leaping 14.79m/48-6.25.
The Texas Tech women's 4 x 400 meter relay of Cierra White, Lygia Forman, Natalie Thompson and Montenae Speight ran a season-best time of 3:36.42, earning ninth place in the event, and the No. 13 spot in the nation.
Viershanie Latham earned a solid eighth-place finish in the women's triple jump, with a leap of 12.66m/41-6.50. Gionna Jackson placed 13th, with a mark of 12.46m/40-10.5.
"We had some good performances today," Texas Tech head coach Wes Kittley said. "We are learning how to compete at a national level, and today helped us in that process. We just have to stay positive and step up when the time comes."
A pair of Tech distance runners competed at the Iowa State Classic, on Saturday, in Ames, Iowa. In the men's mile, Nick Rivera ran a personal-best 4:08.84 to place 28th. Miguel Bautista ran the 3,000 meters in 8:38.72 to place 27th.
Tech track & field will split the squad again next weekend, as Texas Tech will host the annual Red Raider Open on Friday, Feb. 20, and Tech is also scheduled to send athletes to the Alex Wilson Invitational, Feb. 21, in South Bend, Ind.
