LUBBOCK, Texas - Former Texas Tech outfielder Mikey Kenney has signed a professional contract with the Dallas Charge of the National Pro Fastpitch League (NPF), the team announced Wednesday morning.
Kenney, one of the top offensive standouts to ever play at Texas Tech, is the seventh player to sign with the Charge since the team announced it would join the NPF as an expansion franchise this past January.
"It's a huge honor," Kenney said of signing her first professional contract. "I couldn't be more excited and more thankful to the Dallas Charge to give me this opportunity to play professional softball. I'm looking forward to the upcoming season."
A three-time All-Big 12 honoree, Kenney wrapped her four-year career at Texas Tech in 2013 as one of the most successful players in school history after compiling a .326 average to go along with 215 hits, 45 home runs and 149 RBI.
Kenney remains the Texas Tech all-time leader for career home runs, RBI and runs scored and ranks among the top five for batting average, at-bats, hits, doubles, stolen bases and walks. Her .326 batting average is the second-highest for a four-year player in school history.
"We're really excited about the depth Mikey Kenney can add to our lineup," Charge general manager Kevin Shelton said in a release announcing Kenney's signing. "For those familiar with the Big 12, they'll remember the big bat Kenney brought at the top of Tech's lineup. She's a power hitter who can also hit for average and she's an experienced outfielder who isn't afraid to compete."
Kenney was a staple in the Texas Tech lineup during her career as she played in 226 games from her spot in centerfield where she was also among the nation's top defensive players as well.
During her tenure from 2010-13, Texas Tech advanced to three NCAA Regionals and won 151 games. The Red Raiders had not previously advanced to the postseason since 2001 prior to Kenney's arrival.
Kenney earned her undergraduate degree at Texas Tech in the spring of 2014 and is currently working on her masters in sports management. She is currently a graduate assistant in the Texas Tech athletics department working in the event operations office.
The Arvada, Colorado native joins a list of former Red Raiders who have played professionally, joining the likes of Emily Bledsoe and Adriana Perez, both former teammates. Kenney will be the first Red Raider to ever play in the NPF.
The Charge will open their inaugural season on June 3 against the Pennsylvania Rebellion.
