LUBBOCK, Texas -- The No. 37 Texas Tech women's golf team begins the hunt for a Big 12 Championship this weekend when it tees off Friday morning at The Dominion Country Club in San Antonio.
Tech is coming off its sixth consecutive top six finish and third straight top three finish after tying for third at the SMU Invitational at Dallas Athletic Club on April 11.
"Our team has played well all year, especially this spring," head coach JoJo Robertson said. "We've gotten better each time we've teed it up and had some great practices and had some great practices the last couple of days. I'm just ready to get there and get started."
Teeing off for Tech at the No. 1 spot will be senior Stephanie Bertelsen, followed by freshman Gabby Barker, freshman Lauren Mason, junior Sarah Brown and junior Kimmy Hill.
Bertelsen was the team's top finisher at the 2014 Big 12 Championship in Austin, finishing 11th at 5-over par.
Brown has been one of the hotter players this season, finishing in the top 10 twice with a 73.8 stroke average. She's recorded six sub-par rounds including the team's lowest 18-hole score this season with a 6-under 66 at the Schooner Fall Classic in October. She credits the teamwork and short game for helping everyone improve with each tournament.
"I think from last fall to this spring, it has really shown up in our games," Brown said. "We all work really well together and support each other completely on the course so its a lot of fun working with these girls."
Tech, the fourth seed, will tee off at 9 a.m. Friday in the first round alongside No. 5 Texas and No. 6 TCU. The Lady Raiders beat the Horned Frogs by 32 strokes in their last tournament together.
Robertson said she knows the group is poised to make a run but hopes they remain humble all the way until the last hole.
"I think the most important thing is to relax," she said. "We've worked so hard all spring and there's been so much competition within our team alone that everything we could do to get better, we've already done. We can't force anything. So we just have to go out there and play and enjoy it and just relax."
