LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech fans celebrated the start of the 2015-16 sports season with the annual Red Raider Club Kickoff Luncheon, held Thursday, August 20 at the Lubbock Civic Center Exhibit Hall.
"We aspire each and every day to be the best collegiate athletic program in the country," Texas Tech Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt said. "We want to compete for championships. It's a journey; some of our programs are at that level, others are building and the expectation is to get better and show progress. We are very optimistic and confident that we'll see that from all of our sports teams this year."
The annual event is a celebration of the beginning of the 2015-16 TTU athletics season and included several guest speakers including head coaches Kliff Kingsbury (football), Don Flora (volleyball), Tom Stone (women's soccer) and Wes Kittley (cross country/track and field). Also in attendance were the Red Raider cross country, volleyball, soccer and football teams. Texas Tech Chancellor Robert Duncan, President Duane Nellis and Hocutt also spoke.
The program also featured special guest emcee Emily Jones McCoy, current Texas Rangers field reporter and Texas Tech alum. Also on hand to entertain the crowd were the Goin' Band From Raiderland, Raider Red, Saddle Tramps and the Tech cheer and pom squads.
"We've had 16 practices in 13 days," Kingsbury said of his football team. "I'm very proud of this group. It's a different look, a different desire in their eye and a different focus. That focus and leadership can be attributed to our tremendous group of seniors."
The Texas Tech fall sports schedule begins tomorrow when the No. 15 Red Raider women's soccer team takes on Southern California in the Lobo Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. at 6 p.m. CT.
