LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech freshman Sofia Garcia combined to shoot 1-under over two rounds Monday to lead the Lady Raiders during the opening day of the Betsy Rawls Invitational held at the University of Texas Golf Club in Austin.
Garcia finished with a 143 card through two rounds after a 2-over 70 in the morning session before returning with a 1-over score over the next 18 holes. She is one stroke out of a tie for third place and two strokes out of second entering Tuesday's third and final round.
Miami's Dewi Weber took a commanding first-day lead after combining for an impressive 15-under card that featured a 64 opening round and then a 65 in the afternoon. Her successful start catapulted the Hurricanes into the opening-day lead with a 6-under 570 that was eight strokes better than second place Kent State.
The Lady Raiders head into the final round in seventh place following a 12-over 300 opening 18 holes and then a 8-over second round. Tech is three strokes back of SMU in sixth place and five strokes behind fifth place Baylor. Texas and UNLV completed the top four at 8-over and 14-over, respectively.
Gabby Barker, who won the Betsy Rawls individual title a year ago, posted Tech's second-lowest score as she overcome a difficult 6-over opening round to shoot 1-under in the afternoon. She is tied for 20th overall at 5-over for the tournament.
Emma Ballard and Mami Yamamoto both fired 4-over opening round cards before Ballard was one stroke better over her next 18 holes while Yamamoto added a 7-over score that did not count to Tech's second-round total. Lauren Mason, meanwhile, started the day with a 10-over card and then posted a 5-over second round.
The final round of the Betsy Rawls Invitational will begin with an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start Tuesday morning. Live results will be posted throughout the round at www.BirdieFire.com.
