Softball Caps Off Fall as Black Team Takes Red Raider World Series
November 17, 2016 | Softball
Red squad takes Thursday’s finale, but black wins the series, 2-1.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech softball put the finishing touches on its fall season as it held the Red Raider World Series, a three-game intrasquad competition, this week at Rocky Johnson Field. The black team claimed bragging rights by winning the first two games, but the red team rebounded with a tight 8-7 victory Thursday to wrap up the fall slate. Â
The black team took game one of the series Tuesday, scoring seven runs in the fourth inning to rally from a 6-1 deficit and secure an 8-7 win.
Senior Brittany Warnecke hit a home run and brought in three RBI to lead the black squad, while sophomore Jessica Hartwell continued her impressive fall with a home run and three RBI of her own for the red team.
In game two, black used a steady offensive attack to build a 6-1 lead, which was more than enough for senior RHP Mattison Maisel who pitched a complete game allowing just six hits and striking out four as black won 6-4.
Freshman Kassidy Scott powered the black offense going 4-5 with 2 RBI while junior catcher Allison Knopp added a home run and three RBI.
Thursday's finale was a back-and-forth affair with the red team eventually posting three runs in the bottom of the sixth to rally for an 8-7 victory.
Senior Susan Welborn hit the go ahead home run in the sixth, a two-run skyscraper to left center, for her team-high third hit of the game. Senior Dominic Alcocer was strong in relief for the red team with scoreless sixth and seventh frames to secure the win.
The Red Raider World Series puts a stamp on a fall season in which Tech went 8-0 while outscoring opponents 69-13. The Red Raiders, in year three under Gregory, will continue preparation for their 2017 season throughout the winter.
