Dean will be recognized with the Heritage Award Friday night during Texas Tech Hall of Fame Banquet
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Double T Varsity Club will present Dr. Bill Dean with its Heritage Award during the Texas Tech Hall of Fame Banquet held Friday night at the Overton Hotel and Conference Center.
Â
The Heritage Award is bestowed by the Texas Tech Athletics Department to a former letterwinner who has been exemplary in their chosen field while displaying qualities of sportsmanship, character and integrity.
Â
Dean, the President and CEO of the Texas Tech Alumni Association, was one of the first baseball student-athletes after the sport regained intercollegiate status in 1954. He has since then served Texas Tech University in his role with the alumni association as well as a communications professor.
Â
"We're excited to present Dr. Dean with this year's Heritage Award," said Rodney Allison, Executive Director of the Double-T Varsity Club. "He has served Texas Tech University greatly since his days with the baseball program, and we're proud to recognize him as well as our Hall of Fame inductees on Friday night."
Â
Dean, a baseball letterwinner from 1956-60, has led the Texas Tech Alumni Association for 38 years where he is well-respected among Red Raider alumni as well as those around the country. He has also served as a consultant for other alumni associations across the country and has made numerous presentations. He is a past president of the Council of Alumni Association Executives.
Â
In addition, Dean is also a popular professor on the Texas Tech campus where he teaches in the College of Media and Communication. Dean has received numerous awards not only for his teaching but also for his rapport with students. He has been named Best Teacher at Texas Tech nine times in a student poll and was twice awarded the high honor of President's Teaching Award for Excellence.
Â
In 2008, Dean and his wife, Peggy, were honored when the Texas Tech Alumni Association National Board of Directors named the most recent expansion of the McKenzie-Merket Alumni Center after them.
Â
The Texas Tech Hall of Fame will add five members Friday night as Josh Bard (baseball), Jia Perkins (women's basketball), Wes Welker (football), Ted Watts (football) and Jonathan Johnson (track and field) will be enshrined as part of the 2016 class. Texas Tech will also induct former football administrative assistant Jennie Bailey into its Hall of Honor.
Â
The Hall of Fame banquet begins at 6:30 p.m. and will be streamed live for the first time on TexasTech.TV. Â
