Iowa State Tops Texas Tech, 8-6, Friday Night

LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech softball fell, 8-6, Friday night in game one of the team's three-game set at Rocky Johnson Field. The loss dropped Texas Tech to 19-26 on the season including a 4-6 mark in Big 12 play."The wind wasn't blowing and we were stoked to play our game," head Texas Tech softball coach Adrian Gregory said. "It just didn't swing our way today. We will go back tomorrow and attempt to win the series. We need to play our best each day. Sometimes it falls your way and sometimes you just need to keep working."
Texas Tech started strong defensively, holding the Cyclones (18-24, 1-6) scoreless through the first two innings of play. The first run of the game came in the top of the third when Iowa State's Cathlin Bingham singled to left, scoring Hope Scheffert from third.
Trailing 1-0 in the home half of the fourth, Texas Tech responded with an RBI double from Kirsten Schwirtlich that plated Jessica Hartwell from third, sending the game to the fifth tied at one.
With both teams able to score in the fifth, the Cyclones jumped out in front with six runs on six hits in the top of the sixth inning to send the Red Raiders to the plate trailing 8-2.
Catcher Susan Welborn cut into the cyclone lead with a two run homer to straightaway center in the bottom of the fifth pulling Tech to 8-4 heading into the final frame.
Following a three-up, three-down top of the seventh, the Red Raiders rallied for two more runs in the bottom of the inning, but the rally would fall short as Iowa State claimed the 8-6 victory.
With the loss, the Red Raiders fell to 28-17 all-time against the Cyclones including a 14-7 mark in Lubbock. The 14 runs scored in Friday's game marked the highest scoring contest between the two teams since the 2014 season when the Red Raiders secured a 15-0 win over the Cyclones at Rocky Johnson Field.
Freshman Kiani Ramsey recorded her fourth triple of the season in Friday night's game, tying the all-time single season record in triples. Leah Legler (2008) was the last Red Raider to hit four triples in a single season.
Texas Tech will be back in action Saturday afternoon as they look to pull even in the series with the Cyclones. First pitch for Saturday's game is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT. Fans can follow all of the action from the 2016 softball season by following @TTUSB on Twitter.
