Texas Tech Falls to Texas, 2-0, in Game Two
April 09, 2016 | Softball
Mattison Maisel threw 5.1 innings giving up just one run in the Red Raiders' 2-0 loss to Texas.
"We were very timid at the plate today," Texas Tech head coach Adrian Gregory said. "When we are the aggressor, we don't strike out looking. Today I thought we were not the aggressor and I thought Tiarra Davis threw a really great game. I just think we got out played today."
The Red Raiders found themselves down 1-0 early as Texas blasted a two-out solo shot to left center in the bottom of the first inning. Following the home run, a single and back-to-back walks, Gregory called on Mattison Maisel to enter the game to pick up the final out of the frame.
The junior pitcher came in and pitched five more innings in relief where she surrendered only four hits, including an RBI single in the fourth that stood as the final run of the game.
"For them to see Mattison as much as they have and for her to keep them as off-balanced as she has is a good thing for us," Gregory said of Maisel's performance. "Our defense is playing behind her 100 percent right now. We typically hit well so if both of those things come to fruition for us then we will be right where we need to be."
With the loss, the Red Raiders fell to 19-20 on the season, including a 4-1 mark in Big 12 play. The loss also snapped a season-high six game win streak by the Red Raiders. Texas now holds a 34-10 lead in the all-time series record, including a 15-4 record between the two teams in Austin.
The Red Raiders will be back in action Sunday afternoon for game three of the three-game series against the Longhorns. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at McCombs Field. Fans can follow all of the action from the 2016 softball season by following @TTUSB on Twitter.
