Texas Tech freshman shot a 2-over 74 Wednesday at the World Amateur Championships
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech freshman golfer Sofia Garcia completed the opening round of the World Amateur Championships on Wednesday, firing a 2-over 74 at the Playa Paraiso Golf Club in Riviera Maya, Mexico.
Garcia, playing for Paraguay as part of the team aspect of the tournament, currently sits in a tie for 30th entering Thursday's second round after recording four birdies Wednesday. The 72-hole tournament concludes with a final round Saturday morning.
Paraguay ended the opening day tied for 18th overall in the team format that takes the top-two scores from each three-player team. Garcia is teamed with Maria Gernanda Escuauriza, who likewise had a 2-over card Wednesday, and Milagros Chaves. Chaves' 7-over score did not count toward Paraguay's team total.
Garcia arrived at Texas Tech just a month ago after signing with head coach JoJo Robertson's program last November. A native of Asuncion, Paraguay, Garcia previously took part in the European Amateur Championship this past July as well as the Dutch Junior Open.
She was not with the Lady Raiders this past week when Tech finished second in the Red Raider Invitational held at The Rawls Course. Gabby Barker won the event, her second individual title of her collegiate career.
