Sofia Garcia will look to become the first three-time winner of the South American Amateur
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech freshman golfer Sofia Garcia will look to defend her South American Amateur Championship title beginning Thursday when she tees off the 72-hole event at the Martindale Country Club in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Â
Garcia has won each of the past two South American Amateur titles and will be looking to become the first player in tournament history to win the crown three times. She fired a 5-under-par 67 second round a year ago – the lowest 18-hole score of the tournament – on her way to defending her title by a stroke at 7-under overall.
Â
One of the top amateur players to ever sign with the Lady Raider golf program, Garcia previously took part in the South American Team Championship with her native Paraguay in November and then the World Amateur Championships in September.
Â
Garcia began her Tech career with an impressive showing this fall as she recorded a 73.8 scoring average over four tournaments. Her best finish came in just her second collegiate event as she finished tied for fifth at the Jim West Challenge.
Â
Results will be posted throughout the South American Amateur Championship at www.SAAmateur.org.
