LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech freshman golfer Sofia Garcia opened the South American Amateur Championship with a 1-under-par 71 Thursday at the Martindale Country Club in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Garcia, who has won the event in each of the past two years, is currently in a three-way tie for fourth place as she trails first-day leader Isabella Fierro as well as Ela Anacona and Paula Grant. Gierro fired a 4-under 68 to lead the 51-player field while Anacona is a stroke back and Grant is two off the lead.
Â
Garcia, a native of Asuncion, Paraguay, is looking to become the first three-time winner of the event. It was the second round that boosted Garcia a year ago as she recorded a 5-under card that paved the way to a one-stroke victory.
