Scholar Athlete of the Month: Kiani Ramsey
January 26, 2017 | Softball, Academics, Student-Athlete Development
The 2016 All-Big 12 Second Team selection strives to become an occupational therapist.
As a freshman last year, Kiani Ramsey tied the Texas Tech softball record for the most triples in a season, but that is not the only area in which she is excelling.
With hopes of becoming an occupational therapist, Ramsey is currently majoring in kinesiology. Her ambition and success in the classroom coupled with her play on the field has earned her the title as January's Red Raider Club Scholar Athlete of the Month.
"Kiani pushes herself to excel in the classroom just as hard as she does on the field," head coach Adrian Gregory said. "She is very inwardly motivated and it is showing outwardly. She had a great year as a freshman, but her mentality this year has been hands down the best it has ever been."
Â
Being able to balance both collegiate athletics and classwork takes time to learn, but Ramsey, a Portland, Texas, native, says she owes her success to being able to access all of the resources that are available to athletes, such as the Marsha Sharp Center for Student Athletes.
Â
"All the support I have received helps take some of the stress away," Ramsey said. "There is always someone who can help guide you."
Â
While touring Texas Tech as a prospective-student athlete two years ago, Ramsey says she loved the atmosphere of the college and that she fell in love with the campus.
Â
"It felt like a second home," she said. "I knew I could come here and be successful.
Â
"The coaches are always there to help. It's great to get that extra push to succeed on the field and in the classroom."
Â
Ramsey's softball career isn't over yet, and while she is a junior in the classroom, she is only a sophomore on the field and she is excited about the upcoming season.
Â
"We have a lot of potential and a great shot at post-season this year," Ramsey said.
Â
Being able to compete at a Division 1 level and traveling to play some of the top teams has been some of her favorite parts of collegiate softball.
Â
Ramsey couldn't be more thankful for the opportunity she has received to play softball while getting her education.
Â
"This scholarship is allowing me to do what I love on and off the field," Ramsey said.
