Softball Splits Opening Day Doubleheader
February 10, 2017 | Softball
Red Raiders topple Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, 7-0, after falling to Texas State, 2-1.
SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas Tech softball launched its 2017 campaign at the CenturyLink Classic on Friday, dropping a tight 2-1 battle to host Texas State before rebounding for a 7-0 triumph of Texas A&M – Corpus Christi.
Â
The Red Raiders (1-1) received solid outings from freshmen right-handers Kassidy Scott and Hannah Broseman. Scott went six innings strong against Texas State (1-1), surrendering just two runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Broseman then went on to post a complete game shutout against TAMUCC (0-2), giving up four hits while striking out four.
Â
"I thought we had two freshmen throw really great in the circle both games," head coach Adrian Gregory said. "I loved our approach all day. We got one win and one loss, but I thought our approach was spot on. It was exactly how we should represent the Double T and how we play the game."
Â
The Bobcats and Red Raiders were scoreless entering the bottom of the fifth, when Texas State was able to bring a run across. Down 2-0 in the seventh, Tech would threaten as senior Camaury Washington pinch ran and scored off a Bobcat error. With the tying run on third and go ahead run on second, junior Allison Knopp was unable to complete the comeback bid, popping out to end the game.
Â
In the nightcap, it was freshman Raina O'Neal who got the scoring started with a two-run home run to centerfield. The Red Raiders added onto their lead in the second as senior Ashley Fultz led off with a triple and was brought home by Knopp on the next pitch with a sac fly to left field.
Â
The lead remained at 3-0 until the fifth inning when Washington and O'Neal performed a double steal to score O'Neal from third as Washington took second. Senior Brittany Warnecke then brought home Washington with a single to left field, giving Tech a 5-0 lead. Sophomore Kiana Workman made it 7-0 in the sixth with her first career home run, a two-run shot to left field.
Â
Texas Tech continues play at the CenturyLink Classic Saturday when it takes on Iowa (2-0) at 3 p.m., and Abilene Christian at 7 p.m.
Â
QUOTE OF THE NIGHT
Gregory on the freshmen pitching performances:
"Our expectations for both of those (freshmen) are really high. They were recruited to be great, young pitchers in our league. For them to come out and individually have two good outings was really big for morale. We've had expectations for them for a few years since they've been committed to us."
