Lady Raiders Return to Lady Puerto Rico Classic
February 11, 2017 | Women's Golf
Texas Tech tees off the three-day tournament at 7 a.m. CT Sunday morning in Puerto Rico
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech women's golf team will look to navigate a challenging field beginning Sunday morning when the Lady Raiders tee off the Lady Puerto Rico Classic at the Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
The Lady Raiders are one of 12 teams currently ranked in the top 50 by Golfweek to participate in the 15-team tournament that features the likes of No. 6 Georgia, No. 7 Furman, No. 10 Arkansas as well as No. 13 Purdue, which is hosting the event.
Tech enters the field ranked as high as 38th nationally by Golfstat and then No. 41 by Golfweek. The Lady Raiders opened their spring slate previously with a head-to-head win over Purdue in 18 holes of stroke play last Sunday in Florida.
Sofia Garcia led the Lady Raiders against the Boilermakers, firing a 4-under 68 to lead the field. Tech topped Purdue by 12 strokes thanks in part by 2-over rounds from both Gabby Barker and Lauren Mason.
Tech head coach JoJo Robertson will utilize a similar lineup this week in Puerto Rico as Garcia, Barker and Mason will be joined over three days by sophomores Mami Yamamoto and Emma Ballard. Yamamoto added a 4-over card last week in Florida for Tech's final contributing score.
The Lady Raiders have been a regular in the Lady Puerto Rico Classic under Robertson as this is the seventh time in the past eight seasons where Tech has traveled to the Caribbean. Tech finished third at the event a year ago after Barker was just a stroke shy of medalist honors with a 7-under 209 card.
Tech will be paired with fellow Big 12 foe Iowa State and then Augusta during Sunday's opening round. Sunday's shotgun start is expected to get underway beginning at 7 a.m. CT. Fans can keep up with the Lady Raiders throughout their trip to Puerto Rico through live stats on www.BirdieFire.com or via @TexasTechWGolf on Twitter.
