Miscues Doom Softball in Loss to Mississippi State

Red Raiders face quick turnaround, taking on Cal-State Fullerton Saturday at 9 a.m.
PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – Mississippi State took advantage of several Red Raider miscues in the fourth inning, plating all six of its run in the frame en route to a 6-3 victory over Texas Tech on Friday in Tech's third game at the Puerto Vallarta Challenge in Mexico.

The Bulldogs' first three batters in the fourth reached by either a hit-by-pitch or a Red Raider error. Another error and three singles later and the Bulldogs had a 6-0 lead.

The Red Raiders gained a run back in the bottom half of the inning on a Brittany Warnecke single to center field that scored senior Devon Thomey.

Tech cut the deficit to three in the bottom of the sixth when Raina O'Neal hit a moonshot over the right field wall. The two-run shot was her team-leading fourth home run of the season.

Freshman pitcher Kassidy Scott takes the loss for the Red Raiders, giving up three earned runs on three hits with three strikeouts, two hit-by-pitch and a walk. Senior Mattison Maisel came on in relief in the fourth inning and surrendered three unearned runs on three hits with a strikeout and a walk.

The loss drops Tech to 5-3 and 2-1 at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge, while the Bulldogs improve to 5-3 and 2-1 at the event.

Tech resumes play at the Puerto Vallarta Challenge with an early 9 a.m. CT start time against Cal-State Fullerton (3-4), who the Red Raiders defeated 5-1 on Thursday. The Titans are also 2-1 at the event after beating Mississippi State, 6-1, and Florida Gulf Cost, 4-1, Friday.
