Lady Raiders in Fourth After Two Rounds in Houston

Cara Barker shot a career-low 68 first round to finish in a tie for seventh at the Dickson Invitational
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech utilized a career-low opening round from Cara Barker Monday morning to end the first day of the Dickson Invitational in a tie for fourth place at The Woodlands Country Club.

Barker fired a 4-under to push Tech to a 2-under-par 286 opening round that was followed by a 3-over 291 during the afternoon session. The Lady Raiders are in a three-way tie for fourth overall with Purdue and No. 19 Texas A&M.

"We had a good start today," Tech head coach JoJo Robertson said. "I'm happy for Cara to have had her low tournament round. She really lifted us this morning. The team hung in there this afternoon, and I think we are in great shape to put up a good score tomorrow."

Barker ended the day in a tie for seventh individually as she followed with a 1-over 73 second round. Her opening-round card marked the lowest of her career, five strokes better than her previous mark from the 2015 Ptarmigan Ram Classic.

She is six strokes off the individual lead as Texas A&M's Maddie Szeryk and Florida State's Morgane Metraux both combined to shoot 9-under on the day. Barker will be looking for her second career top-20 finish during Tuesday's final round.

Only two strokes separate the rest of Tech's lineup as Mami Yamamoto leads the group after a pair of 1-over cards that placed the sophomore in a tie for 28th overall. Sofia Garcia and Lauren Mason are tied for 36th individually following a 3-over day.

Garcia fired Tech's other under-par round with a 1-under card over the first 18 holes before finishing 4-over during the afternoon session. Mason, meanwhile, was 2-over during the morning and then added a 1-over score.

Gabby Barker bounced back from a 4-over opening round to lead the Lady Raiders with an even-par card later in the day. Barker, who has finished inside the top 25 in all six tournaments this season, is currently tied for 43rd overall.

Emma Ballard, playing as an individual this week, is a stroke back of Gabby Barker in a tie for 47th overall following a 1-over opening round that was followed by a 4-over card.

Florida State ran away with the opening-day lead as the Seminoles combined to shoot 22-under overall, 15 strokes better than SMU in second place. Kent State is in third place overall at 1-under-par, two strokes better than the Lady Raiders as well as Purdue and Texas A&M.

Tech is leading its Big 12 counterparts in TCU and Oklahoma as the Horned Frogs are in seventh place at 2-over-par while the Sooners are three strokes behind that in eighth overall.
