No. 24 Texas Tech Looks to Defend Henssler Title
March 26, 2017 | Women's Golf
The Lady Raiders tee off the two-day, 54-hole tournament Monday morning in Kennesaw, Georgia
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech women's golf team will look to defend its Henssler Financial Intercollegiate title this week when the 24th-ranked Lady Raiders open the 54-hole tournament Monday morning at the Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw, Georgia.
Â
The Lady Raiders ran away with the tournament crown a year ago – the 11th under head coach JoJo Robertson – as Tech topped the rest of the field by 10 strokes thanks in part to 40 birdies between the three rounds.
Â
Lauren Mason shared the individual title during the 2016 event as well after finishing in a three-way tie with Troy's Fatima Cano and Augusta's Josefine Nyqvist at 4-over for the tournament. The victory was the first in Mason's career.
Â
Mason will be in Tech's lineup again this week as she will be joined by fellow junior Gabby Barker as well as sophomores Cara Barker and Mami Yamamoto and freshman Sofia Garcia. It is the same lineup Tech used a week ago when the Lady Raiders closed the Briar's Creek Invitational in seventh place.
Â
Tech has closed all three of its tournaments this spring among the top-seven teams while also winning a pair of head-to-head dual matches over Texas and Purdue. The Lady Raiders have finished in the top-10 of all eight tournaments this season dating back to the fall.
Â
Tech is the second-highest ranked squad this week in the 14-team field that also includes No. 13 Kent State, No. 30 Illinois, No. 31 Purdue, No. 47 Augusta and No. 58 Maryland. Kent State and Purdue are both familiar opponents for the Lady Raiders as the two schools also participated in the Lady Puerto Rico Classic and the Dickson Invitational.
Â
The two-day tournament begins with a pair of rounds Monday morning followed by a final 18 holes Tuesday. Tech will be paired with Purdue, Kent State and Augusta on Monday when the first round tees off with an 8 a.m. CT shotgun start.
Â
Live results will be available throughout the tournament at GolfStat.com. Tech fans can also receive updates throughout the season by following @TexasTechWGolf on Twitter.
