Mami Yamamoto fired a 1-under 71 card Saturday to help push Texas Tech into a tie for third overall
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – No. 27 Texas Tech continued its trend of successful second rounds Saturday as the Lady Raiders moved up six spots at the Big 12 Championships following a 6-over 294 at The Dominion Country Club.
Â
The Lady Raiders, who entered the day last among the nine-team field, will head into Sunday's final round in contention for their first-ever Big 12 title as Tech ended the day tied for third place, seven strokes back of tournament leader Texas and four back of second-place Oklahoma State.
Â
"I thought the team played great today," Tech head coach JoJo Robertson said. "The conditions were tough. It was windy and cold but I was so proud of the way they hung in there and fought. We'll need another good round tomorrow."
Â
Tech's 6-over card matched Texas for the lowest on the day, allowing the Lady Raiders make a gigantic leap up the leaderboard. Oklahoma State had the field's second-lowest round with a 12-over card. Tech and Kansas are now 22-over for the tournament, one stroke better than fourth-place TCU and two ahead of fifth place Iowa State.
Â
The Lady Raiders' improvement from day one partially resulted from the play of Mami Yamamoto, who recorded a 1-under 71 card thanks in part to six birdies on the round, four of that came over the final six holes. The impressive round moved Yamamoto to 6-over for the tournament and in a tie for 16th individually.
Â
"I was impressed with Mami's finish," Robertson added. "I watched her last six holes and she had four birdies in there. For us, that's big. We always talk about finishing strong and she birdied her final two holes. Lauren (Mason) also birdied 18 when we needed it so you've got to love that."
Â
Mason put together an impressive day of her own with her second straight 1-over round to move squarely into contention for the Big 12 individual crown. Mason pared the first seven holes on the morning and then added birdies at the par-3 eighth and the par-5 18th to place her three strokes back of leader Sophia Schubert of Texas.
Â
Gabby Barker and Sofia Garcia contributed Tech's other two counting scores as Barker signed for a 2-over 74 while Garcia chipped in a 4-over card. Garcia is tied for 16th now at 6-over while Barker and fellow teammate Cara Barker, who added a 6-over round, are tied for 34th at 12-over for the tournament.
Tech will look to move even further up the leaderboard Sunday morning when the Lady Raiders join Texas and Oklahoma State as the last teams on the tee. The group is slated for a 10 a.m. start with results available throughout the round at Golfstat.com.
