Red Raiders Battle No. 7 Oklahoma to 4-2 Loss
April 28, 2017 | Softball
Game two of the three-game series will be played at 2 p.m. Saturday.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech softball dropped a hard-fought 4-2 decision to No. 7 Oklahoma Friday night at Rocky Johnson Field in the first of three games against the defending national champions.
Â
RBI singles by sophomores Kiana Workman and Kiani Ramsey in the bottom of the fifth cut a 4-0 Sooner lead to 4-2, but the Red Raiders were unable to manage any further damage to Oklahoma, who has now won 19 of its last 20 games and 22 straight road games dating back to 2016.
Â
Freshman Kassidy Scott gave Tech 5.1 quality innings in all, giving up just two runs on five hits, a walk and two strikeouts. Senior Mattison Maisel spelled Scott during the fourth and fifth frames, surrendering two runs on two hits in 1.2 innings pitched.
Â
"I thought we were very competitive from inning one to seven," head coach Adrian Gregory said. "Our kids played really good defense and I thought that Kassidy (Scott) and Matti (Maisel) threw well. I loved our at bats against (Paige) Lowary. There is a reason why they are the defending national champions, but our girls played calm and collected, and I look forward to tomorrow."
Â
Oklahoma got on the board in the top of the fourth thanks to back-to-back doubles to lead off the frame. They would add one more before a diving grab by Workman with the bases loaded ended the inning.
Â
The Sooners put two more across in the next inning after a leadoff home run and a two-out single that scored a runner from second.
Â
The Red Raiders fought back in the bottom of the fifth with two runs of their own. Senior Ashley Fultz got things started with a base on balls, and junior Kaylee Strickland entered to pinch run. After senior Sarah Weber hit an infield single, Workman got Tech on the board as she ripped an RBI single into right field. Ramsey then plated Tech's second run with an infield single to third, scoring Weber.
Â
Freshman Mariah Lopez came on for the Sooners to pick up her second save of the season, earning five strikeouts in the final two innings.
Â
With the loss, Texas Tech falls to 17-27 on the season and 4-12 in Big 12 play. Meanwhile, the Sooners improve to 42-8 and remain tied atop the league standings at 12-1.
Â
Game two of the three-game series has been shifted up to a 2 p.m. start time due to forecasted weather Saturday evening.
