Texas Tech concluded the opening round of the Silverado Showdown in 15th place Sunday
LUBBOCK, Texas – Freshman golfer Sofia Garcia led No. 26 Texas Tech over the first 18 holes of the Silverado Showdown Sunday as she fired a 1-over-par 73 at the Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, California.
Â
Playing in one of its most-challenging fields this season, Tech concluded the first day of the 54-hole tournament in 15th place after a 15-over 303 opening round. Besides Tech, the 18-team field includes eight other schools who are currently ranked in the top 40 of the latest Golfweek Magazine poll.
Â
Garcia, who is coming off back-to-back top 20 finishes, closed the afternoon in a tie for 21st overall thanks in part to a team-high four birdies. She is six strokes off the individual lead after Gonzaga's Bianca Pagdanganan jumped out to a 5-under 67 card to start the tournament.
Â
Cara Barker recorded Tech's next-lowest score with a 4-over round that placed her in a tie for 52nd overall. Gabby Barker and Lauren Mason trailed her by one stroke in a tie for 63rd while Mami Yamamoto closed the day in a tie for 77th following a 7-over score.
Â
No. 4 Stanford controls the opening-round lead following a 5-under card that was one stroke better than second-place UCLA. The Cardinal and Bruins were the only two schools to fire an under-par round Sunday as Oregon and Colorado are their closest competition at 2-over in a tie for third place.
Â
Northwestern rounded out the top five at 3-over while California is tied with fellow Big 12 foe Iowa State in sixth, just a stroke back of the Wildcats. TCU, meanwhile, is two back of Northwestern in sole possession of eighth place.
Â
Only four strokes separate the Lady Raiders from ninth place with two days still remaining. This is Tech's final tournament prior to the Big 12 Championships, which run April 21-23 in San Antonio, Texas.
Â
The Lady Raiders will be paired with Gonzaga and San Jose State during Tuesday's second round. Yamamoto will begin the round for Tech beginning with a 10:45 a.m. CT tee time. Live results will be available throughout the round at GolfStat.com.
