Texas Tech student-athletes will wear a red stole during commencement ceremonies this weekend
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech Athletics is pleased to announce that 25 student-athletes will earn their degrees this weekend during the university's commencement ceremonies held at United Supermarkets Arena.
For the first time, the athletics department will honor its graduates with a special stole that signifies the individual's status as a Tech student-athlete. The red stoles were presented to each of the graduates during a special ceremony Thursday night inside the north endzone club area at Jones AT&T Stadium.
"We're proud of each of our student-athletes who are earning their degrees this weekend," Tech Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt said. "These student-athletes have been dedicated on the playing field and in the classroom, and we look forward to each of their successes in the future."
Among the list of graduates is current NFL tight end Jace Amaro, who completed his degree through online courses available through the university. Amaro worked with the Marsha Sharp Center for Student-Athletes to complete his degree after forgoing his senior season of eligibility in order to enter the 2014 NFL Draft where he was selected in the second round by the New York Jets.
Amaro, a current member of the Tennessee Titans organization, will be joined walking the stage by fellow football student-athletes Zach Austin, Cameron Batson and Jacarthy Mack. Austin and Batson are both receiving their diplomas with one year of eligibility still remaining.
Wes Kittley's track and field program will see 10 of its past and present student-athletes earn their degrees in Marika Brown, Jocelyn Caro, Lynda Hanson, Viershanie Latham, Hattie Schunk, Reece Timmons, Blake Wood, Joseph Richards and Olympic high jumper Bradley Adkins.
The list of graduates also includes men's golfers Hannes Ronneblad and Federico Zucchetti, softball's Ashley Fultz and Devon Thomey, volleyball's Marguerite Grubb and Aaron Ross, a standout with the men's basketball program the last four seasons. Lauren Mason will also earn her degree but will miss graduation as the Tech women's golf program is currently playing in the NCAA Championships held in Sugar Grove, Illinois.
Commencement ceremonies begin at 3 p.m. Friday with the College of Arts & Sciences. Ceremonies will be streamed live at www.ttu.edu/livestream.
