Collins Runs Lifetime-Best 400m Quarterfinal

Senior Kyle Collins takes a third-place finish in the 400m quarterfinals with a new lifetime best.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Three Red Raiders started their USATF Championships performances this evening with two top five finishes.

A blazing 400m lifetime-best race was run by Kyle Collins in the quarterfinals, clocking a 44.95 run for third overall. Collins qualified for the semifinals based on his No. 14 world-ranked time, running in the same heat is Texas Tech great and Olympic gold medalist Gil Roberts. This time beat out Collins' previous best of 45.06 made in Lubbock at the Red Raider Shootout, where he took second to teammate Steven Champlin. Champlin ran a 45.57 race in the quarterfinals to take the No. 18 spot overall.

Collins will continue to push for advancement to the world championships in the semifinals, taking place tomorrow night at 11:34 p.m. CDT.

To close out her season, Viershanie Latham had a 13.44m/44-1.25 best leap in the women's triple jump claiming the No. 4 spot in advancement to the finals. After her three final attempts Latham kept hold of the No. 4 spot, just missing progression to the world championships. Â

Charles Jones competed in the first round of the men's 800m race, finishing at a 1:49.36 pace, falling short of advancing on.

Tomorrow's junior's competition will start off with incoming freshman Kaylor Harris in women's 100-meter hurdles at 3:55 p.m. CDT. Also competing in the juniors are current Red Raiders Norman Grimes and Justin Hall as well as newcomer Sean Hooper-Mercer.

Joining Collins in wrapping up day two in the seniors' competition tomorrow is Zarriea Willis in the women's high jump at 7:40 p.m. CDT. Â
