Red Raiders To Tee Off 2017-18 Season At Pebble Beach
August 31, 2017 | Men's Golf
LUBBOCK, Texas -- The No. 22 Texas Tech men's golf team is set to tee off the 2017-18 season this weekend at the Carmel Cup, held at historic Pebble Beach Golf Links, in Monterey, Calif, Sept. 1-3.
Â
The three-day tournament features an impressive field that includes top-ranked Oklahoma State, as well as fellow Big 12 rivals TCU and Oklahoma, the defending NCAA Champion. No. 2 Vanderbilt, Arkansas, No. 25 Georgia and Ohio State will also compete.
Â
The Carmel Cup, unique to the majority of collegiate tournaments, allows six golfers to represent their schools, instead of the standard five-member format. The six Red Raiders competing in this weekend's tournament are Fredrik Nilehn, Hurly Long, Ivan Ramirez, Sandy Scott, Wes Artac and Kyle Hogan, with the best five rounds each day contributing to the team score.
A year ago, Nilehn, in his Red Raider debut, captured the individual title in this event, winning a three-way playoff. His final score of 203 stands as the fifth-best three-day score in school history. Tech took third as a team, finishing nine shots off the pace.
Â
This will be the eighth-straight season in which the Red Raiders begin their season at the Carmel Cup.
Â
Tech is set to tee off Friday at 10 a.m. CT, on hole No. 1. Hogan will lead off, followed by Artac, Scott, Ramirez, Long and Nilehn, in that order. Golfstat will provide live scoring for the event.
