NCAA enforcement officer Darin Van Vlerah will visit the Texas Tech campus this week
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech Athletics will participate in the NCAA Enforcement Campus Placement Program this week as the university will welcome Darin Van Vlerah for a behind-the-scenes look at the department's daily operations.
Â
Van Vlerah's visit is part of a newer initiative between the NCAA and its member institutions where enforcement staff visit various campuses around the country to gain a further understanding of the challenges and issues athletics personnel face on a day-to-day basis.
Â
"We're honored the NCAA has selected Texas Tech as part of its Campus Placement Program," Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt said. "This is a tremendous opportunity for our department to demonstrate our dedication to compliance, while also allowing the NCAA to get a glimpse of our daily operations."
Â
The NCAA began the Campus Placement Program in 2014 as a way for enforcement staff members to see first-hand the daily operations of an athletics department through visits that last several days to weeks at a time.
Â
During each campus visit, the enforcement officer, or Van Vlerah in Tech's case, meets with various campus personnel, ranging from the university president and Director of Athletics to coaching staff members and compliance officials.
Â
In his visit alone, Van Vlerah is slated for meetings with President Lawrence Schovanec, Hocutt, Deputy Athletics Director Tony Hernandez as well as the entire compliance staff, which is led by Senior Associate Athletics Director for Compliance and Strategic Initiatives, Jennifer Brashear. He will also attend Tech's monthly head coaches meeting as well as Tuesday night's men's basketball game against Oklahoma.
Â
"We are thrilled to be participating in the NCAA Enforcement Campus Placement Program," Brashear said. "We have been given the opportunity to strengthen relationships with the enforcement staff and showcase Texas Tech Athletics. We are proud of our strong culture of compliance and look forward to Darin getting a behind-the-scenes look at our day-to-day operations."
Â
The Campus Placement Program was started by Jon Duncan, the NCAA's vice president of enforcement, following feedback from presidents, chancellors and athletics administrators. The program has since earned rave reviews from NCAA staff and various institutional members.
