Eleven Red Raiders Named Arthur Ashe Jr. Scholars

Cameron Batson was recognized as a semifinalist for the Arthur Ashe Jr. Male Sports Scholar award
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech recently had 11 student-athletes across five sports honored for their work in the classroom as part of the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Awards.

The recognized student-athletes were highlighted by recent NFL free agent signee Cameron Batson, who was a semifinalist for the Arthur Ashe Jr. Male Sports Scholar award. He was also a second-team honoree among nominated football student-athletes from across the country. Batson was joined among football student-athletes by Talor Nunez, a third-team recipient.

Tech had four student-athletes named to the first team for their respective sports, beginning with soccer's Gwennie and Gabbie Puente. The twins were joined on the first team by two-time NCAA high jump champion Trey Culver.

Fellow track student-athletes Riley Gonzales (second team), Dorian Williams (second team) and Ebenether Wondaferew (third team) were also recognized as were men's basketball standouts Justin Gray (third team) and Norense Odiase (third team).

The Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Awards are designed to honor undergraduate students who have excelled in the classroom as well as on the athletic field. Inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr.'s commitment to education as well as his love for the game of tennis, the award is open to all student-athletes at U.S. colleges or universities.

In order to be nominated, student-athletes must maintain at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA and be active on their campuses or in their community. Texas Tech's nominated were selected by the academic staff at the Marsha Center for Student-Athletes.
