Nilehn adds this award to an already impressive list of honors
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech senior golfer Fredrik Nilehn added to his already impressive list of accolades on Friday by being named the Big 12 Men's Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Nilehn, as well as the other winners, was selected based on the votes of the sport's respective head coaches.
The Big 12 Conference established its Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award in 2012-13. A recipient is named in each conference-sponsored sport. Every Big 12 institution and affiliate members nominate one individual per sport with the winners selected by a vote of the league head coaches for that sport, who are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes. Scholar-Athlete of the Year nominees must be a junior or senior (academic standing), have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher, participate in at least 20 percent of the team's scheduled contests and have a minimum of one year in residence at the institution.
The Goteborg, Sweden, native is a finance major who maintained a 3.74 GPA while building up a resume good enough to be named the Big 12 Player of the Year. He won two tournaments, and while healthy, never finished outside of the top 15 in any tournament. . He was a semifinalist for the Haskins, Hogan and Nicklaus Awards, with a top-three national individual ranking before an injury sidelined him for the postseason.
Nilehn leaves quite a legacy at Tech, despite only being a Red Raider for two years. His 70.13 scoring average this season is a school record, and he leaves Tech ranked second in career individual tournament wins (4).
He cheered his teammates on in Stillwater as they took third in the stroke play portion of the NCAA Championships, a program best, and advanced to the NCAA Match Play Quarterfinals this May.
