Ramirez Earns Top-10 Finish at Latin America Amateur Championship

LA ROMANA, Dominican Republic – Texas Tech senior Ivan Ramirez earned a top-10 finish at the Latin America Amateur Championship by shooting 4-under-par at the four-round tournament at the Teeth of the Dog Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic.
Ramirez shot 71-71-72-70 – 284 as he represented his home country of Colombia with four birdies in his final round on Sunday. He finished the tournament tied for ninth with 19 birdies, highlighted by his second round where he had seven. Ramirez and the Red Raiders will open their spring season at the Amer Ari Invitational (Feb. 7-9) in Kona, Hawaii before also playing at the Desert Classic (Feb. 22-24) in Palm Springs, California next month.
Alvaro Ortiz won the LAAC at 14-under (66-72-70-66) for Mexico, while Luis Fernando Barco (Costa Rica) was the runner-up at 12-under. In 2014, the Masters Tournament, The R&A and the USGA announced the formation of the Latin America Amateur Championship (LAAC) in an effort to further develop amateur golf throughout this region, and specifically in South America, Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean. Former Red Raider Matias Dominguez won the inaugural LAAC in 2015 representing Chile.
Ramirez is coming off a junior season where he finished in fourth place at the NCAA Championships which is the best result by a Tech individual at the tournament. He also earned All-Big 12 Tournament Team honors as a sophomore. Ramirez also had a top-10 finish to finish off the fall season after shooting 71-70-71 – 212 at the Tavistock Collegiate back in October after starting his senior season at The Carmel Cup with a ninth-place showing at 8-under.
