Sofia Garcia will look to become the first three-time winner in tournament history this weekend
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech sophomore golfer Sofia Garcia will tee off at the South American Amateur Championship on Thursday. The four-day tournament will be held at the Los Leones Golf Club in Santiago de Chile.
Â
Garcia, a two-time winner of the South American Amateur, will be looking to become the first player in tournament history to win the individual crown three times. She finished 14th at the event in 2017 but missed the 2018 tournament due to a season-ending injury suffered during the fall.
Â
That injury has not derailed Garcia this season as she has returned to form, averaging 71.0 strokes per round for the Red Raiders through four tournaments this fall. Garcia finished in the top 11 in all four events, which included her first career medalist honor at the Illini Invitational in early October.
Â
The successful fall pushed Garcia to No. 16 among international players for the Arnold Palmer Cup, which is a Ryder Cup-style tournament featuring the top men's and women's collegiate golfers. The Arnold Palmer Cup features the top six American golfers versus a team of international players and will be played June 7-9 at The Alotian Club in Roland, Arkansas.
Â
The South American Amateur features 72 holes of stroke play spread out over four days. The tournament rotates locations every two years and will be played in Chile for the first time since 2008. Garcia's two tournament victories came during the 2015-16 tournaments held in Peru.
Â
