Black Team Evens Fall Series With 2-1 Win
October 10, 2019 | Softball
The Red and Black teams are tied up at one win apiece in Tech’s annual fall series.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Late-inning heroics from the Black Team evened up the Texas Tech softball team's fall series at one win apiece thanks to a 2-1, eight-inning victory over the Red Team, Thursday evening at Rocky Johnson Field.
Â
Erin Edmoundson and Payton Jackson were the only two members of the Red Team to record a hit while Maddie Westmoreland, Michaela Cochran and Yvonne Whaley all collected hits for the Black Team.
Â
Missy Zoch, who picked up the win, and starter Morgan Hornback each threw four full innings for the Black Team while Kamryn Caldwell put in most of the work for the Red Team with 5.2 innings of work. Edmoundson came into the circle in relief for the final 1.2 innings.
Â
Hornback and Caldwell kept both teams hitless through the first two and a half innings before Westmoreland recorded the first hit of the game off Caldwell in the bottom of the third. Jackson answered back with the Red Team's first hit in the top of the fourth, but three quick outs sent the Black Team back to the plate.
Â
The Black Team broke through the silence in the bottom of the fourth when Whaley produced an infield single on just one out. She immediately stole second and moved over to third on a long fly out to right field. In the next at-bat, Whaley took advantage of a mistake behind the plate and slid home safely on a passed ball.
Â
Rolling with a 1-0 lead, Zoch and the Black Team sat the Red Team down in order in the top of the fifth. Caldwell and the Red Team returned the favor in the bottom of the inning and both teams were held silent in the sixth.
Â
Determined to fight back, an error in center field gave the Red Team a leadoff runner on third with no outs. Edmoundson followed up with her first hit of the day and she tied up the game, 1-1 on a roped ball to center field. The Red Team kept the pressure on with a walk, but Zoch answered back and ended the top of the seventh with her second strikeout of the night.
Â
Entering international tiebreaker territory, Zoch used a strikeout and a heads-up double play to escape a runner-on-third situation to put the Black Team back on offense. Junior Heaven Burton was placed on second to begin the inning and a textbook sacrifice bunt from Alanna Barraza moved her over to third base.
Â
Westmoreland and Kelcy Leach drew back-to-back walks to load the bases and an error at second base, forced by Hornback, allowed Burton to cross home and seal the Black Team's 2-1 victory.
