Talaba Knocks off Collins in Naples

NAPLES, Fla. – Former Texas Tech women's tennis All-American Gabriela Talaba tallied another big win in her pro career last weekend, knocking off world No. 31-ranked Danielle Collins in straight sets in the quarterfinals of the Oracle Pro Series Championship.

Following wins over Despina Papamichail and Irina Fetecau, Talaba defeated Collins, 7-6(2), 6-1, to advance to the event's singles semifinals.

Collins advanced to the semifinals of the Australian Open earlier this year. Collegiately, Collins was a two-time NCAA singles champion and a three-time ITA All-American at Virginia.

Talaba also took the doubles title at the tournament, teaming up with Maria Jose Portillo Ramirez to go 4-0 in the doubles draw, including a 7-5, 6-2 win over Seone Mendez and Lea Boskovic in the finals. The win was her 14th career pro title and first of 2019. It was her sixth 25k title, and fifth in doubles.

The former Lady Raider has had an impressive 2019, with highlights including winning the $25,000 Ascension Project Women's Open and defeating former World No. 5 Genie Bouchard in September.
