Edwards Earns Big 12 Player of the Week Laurels
February 19, 2019 | Softball
Sophomore Trenity Edwards earned the first weekly award of her Texas Tech career.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Helping the Texas Tech softball team to another 5-0 weekend, sophomore transfer Trenity Edwards earned Big 12 Player of the Week honors after her standout weekend at the Plainsman Invitational, announced by the league on Tuesday.
Â
Edwards had a stellar week as she recorded RBIs in four of the Red Raiders' matchups. Against Drake, she picked up the first of two hits off senior All-American Nicole Newman and forced an error late in the game that allowed Tech's game-winning run to cross the plate. Edwards sparked the Red Raider lineup against UAB with a three-run homer – her first of the season – to put Tech up on the board. She went on to collect a double and free base later in the game.
Â
Edwards picked up one hit, walk and RBI against Furman before helping Tech to its first-ever win against No. 21 Auburn and first win over a ranked opponent on the road since 2013. As the Red Raiders led 4-3, Edwards gave Tech some breathing room in the top of the sixth after she demolished a 0-1 pitch and sent it sailing over the left-field wall. Downing Drake once more, the newcomer highlighted the Tech offense with a three-run blast over the left-field wall to give the Red Raiders a 4-0 shutout victory.
Â
Edwards tied for the league's No. 1 spot with three homers, eight RBI and 16 total bases. The Oklahoma native currently leads the Big 12 with 12 RBI and ranks in the top 10 with a .759 slugging percentage.
