Red Raiders Head to Las Vegas for Southern Highlands Collegiate

LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 18-ranked Texas Tech men's golf team will compete at the Southern Highlands Collegiate in Las Vegas, Nevada for a three-day tournament that begins at 11 a.m. (CST) on Sunday at the Southern Highlands Golf Club. The Red Raiders finished as the tournament's runner-up last season and are coming off a win at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate last week.
Texas Tech will be represented at the tournament by Sandy Scott, Ivan Ramirez, Adam Blomme, Kyle Hogan and Jansen Smith. It will be the fourth trip to Las Vegas for Ramirez, the third for Scott and Blomme will be playing in the event for the second straight year. Hogan and Smith will be making their tournament debuts. Ramirez shot 5-under and finished third at the event as a sophomore in 2017 and was eighth individually as a freshman. Scott is currently ranked No. 27 in the nation and has a 70.10 adjusted scoring average, while Ramirez is at No. 47.Â
The 15-team tournament in Las Vegas is hosted by UNLV and includes No. 4 Georgia Tech, No. 6 USC, No. 7 Auburn, No. 8 Texas, No. 11 Oklahoma, No. 13 Pepperdine, No. 15 Cal, No. 28 Illinois, No. 30 Florida, No. 35 UCLA, No. 37 Stanford, No. 44 TCU and No. 71 UCF (*based on GolfStat rankings). The final round is scheduled to be played on Tuesday.
The Red Raiders earned the tournament victory at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, California last week with Blomme and Scott making birdie on their final hole to give the team a one-stroke win. Tech's win was its first since the 2017 season and the 20th tournament title for head coach Greg Sands. Blomme earned a runner-up finish at the event by shooting 69-70-70 – 209 (7-under), while Scott was at 5-under after 54 holes and placed fourth individually. Ramirez's 217 (1-over) total put him in 12th, while Smith tied for 13th with a 218 playing as an individual.Â
For the first time, the individual champion at the Southern Highlands will receive an exemption into the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, which will take place Oct. 3-6 at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas.
Florida is the defending tournament champion after shooting 5-under last year, while Justin Suh (USC) won the individual title at 8-under at the 54-hole event. The Red Raiders finished at 1-under for second place behind the Gators at last year's event led by Hurley Long who was seventh overall at 2-under. Ramirez returns to the Southern Highlands course after posted a three-round total of 2-over last year for 20th, Scott was 7-over and Blomme finished at 8-over.
The tournament will be live streamed on Sunday and Monday by Golfweek.com. David Marr III will host the coverage, with Golfweek's Lance Ringler providing interviews and analysis alongside Steve Scott and Ned Michaels. Former winners of the event that is in its 44th year include: Stewart Cink, David Duval, David Gossett, Ryan Moore, Phil Mickelson and Camilo Villegas. Other PGA Tour veterans to play include: Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, John Rahm, Patrick Rodgers and Rich Beem.

Arnold Palmer Cup Ranking: Scott has risen two spots to No. 4 and Ramirez is now No. 7 in the International Rankings. Using Golfstat's NCAA Player Ranking as a base, the Arnold Palmer Cup Ranking awards bonus points for wins and high finishes and a penalty for poor finishes. The ranking also contains a strength of schedule component. The remaining six men's and women's spots for the United States will consist of five committee selections, including at least one non-Division I golfer, and a coaches pick. The balance of the International team will include the men's and women's winners of The R&A Scholars Tournament, four committee selections, and a coaches pick. Arnold Palmer Cup teams will be unveiled live on Golf Channel's Golf Central on Wednesday, March 6 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard.
