Deluge Postpones No. 15/14 Softball’s Series Opener at Iowa State
March 29, 2019 | Softball
Texas Tech will resume game one with a 3-2 lead tomorrow at 1 p.m.
AMES, Iowa – The No. 15/14 Texas Tech softball team carried a 3-2 lead into the top of the fifth, but an abundance of rain at Cyclone Sports Complex halted action in the Red Raiders' series opener at Iowa State, Friday afternoon.
Game one will pick up in the top of the fifth tomorrow at 1 p.m. and game two will begin approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the opener.
Karli Hamilton began the game with a single through the left side, but it was not until the third inning that the Tech offense came alive.
Sophomore catcher Kelcy Leach kicked of the top of the third with a single that fell just out of reach of the Iowa State shortstop. After a textbook bunt by Yvonne Whaley moved pinch runner Miranda Padilla over to second, Hamilton drove her second hit of the day into left field and Iowa State's Hannah Carter made a bobble on the play.
Getting the go-ahead to take home, Padilla was tagged at the plate but the Cyclone catcher couldn't hang on to the ball and the run counted for the Red Raiders.
Whaley slid home safely on a ground out to the pitcher in the next at-bat and Jessica Hartwell's third triple of the season brought in Hamilton from third to make it a 3-0 ball game in favor of the Red Raiders.
However, a walk, error and single loaded the bases for the Cyclones with just one out in the bottom of the inning. A single to shallow right field off starter Missy Zoch plated Iowa State's first run of the game and a bases-loaded walk allowed the Cyclones to cut into Tech's lead, 3-2.
Neither team was able to scratch across a run in the fourth, but Hartwell drew a walk to start the top of the fifth. Taking advantage of the wet conditions, she immediately stole second before the rain came down.
Taylor Satchell will be the first Red Raider up to bat tomorrow and she will step up to the plate with two outs and a runner on second.
