Softball Continues Upward Trend in National Polls

Texas Tech ranks in the top 15 in three separate polls
LUBBOCK, Texas – Following a milestone week in the national polls, the Texas Tech softball team (17-1) continues to rise as it picked up its highest ranking in program history with a No. 14 mark in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Top-25 Poll and No. 15 appearance in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Top-25 Poll.

Last week, the Red Raiders surpassed their No. 17 ranking from 1998 with a No. 16 appearance in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Poll. The program has been ranked in four other seasons – 1998, 1999, 2011 and 2012. Tech was also ranked No. 12 in Softball America's Top-25 Poll, which is in its first year of existence. Â

The Red Raiders, who are set to play a doubleheader against UTEP this afternoon, enter the week with a 17-1 overall record are one of four teams in the country to have dropped one game or less. The team's only loss this season was a narrow, 4-1 decision to No. 5 Washington on Feb. 24.

The Texas Tech offense has powered home runs in all but three games – Wisconsin, Lamar and Drake – this season. The Red Raiders racked up three against Omaha, San Diego State and UT Arlington, a pair of home runs against UAB, Auburn, North Texas and UT Arlington, and one home run against Nebraska (2x), Furman, Drake, then-No. 13 Arizona State, then-No. 17 Oregon, No. 5 Washington and North Texas. The team has collected 25 dingers over the course of the season and has limited opponents to just three.

Sitting right behind Oklahoma in conference batting average, Texas Tech ranks 12th in the NCAA with a .344 batting average. The Red Raiders rank second in the league with 165 total hits, five triples, 23 stolen bases, a .560 slugging percentage and a .421 on-base percentage.
