Ramirez leads No. 10 Red Raiders in El Macero Opening Round

EL MACERO, California – Texas Tech senior Ivan Ramirez shot a 73 on Friday to lead the No. 10 Red Raiders who are in sixth place after the opening round of the El Macero Classic where they posted a 299 and are nine shots back of UC Davis which leads the tournament at El Macero Country Club.
The Red Raiders are at 11-over following the first round of the final regular-season tournament on their schedule. UC Davis, which is the host this week, posted a 2-over team total and is followed by Oregon State (291), Cal State Fullerton and San Francisco (297s) and No. 48 Nevada which is one shot ahead of Tech going into Saturday's second round. The final round is scheduled for Sunday in California.
Ramirez's round puts him in a tie for 13th overall, but only three shots back of Riley Elmes (Loyola Marmount) and Kyosuke Hara (Oregon State) who lead the tournament at 2-under through 18 of 54 holes.
Ramirez opened his tournament by shooting 1-over with three birdies, 13 pars but also a pair of double-bogeys on back-to-back par 4s to start the back-9. Ramirez made two of his birdies on par 4s before making his third on the final hole which is a 554-yard par 5. Scott, who is the highest ranked player in the tournament, shot 3-over in his first 18 holes at El Macero by carding 15 pars and three bogeys. Scott was 2-over on the front 9 and 1-over on the back. Sandy Scott and Markus Braadlie are both five back and tied for 25th after the opening round.
Braadlie matched Scott's 75 in another way, making three birdies but also having three bogeys and a triple. Braadlie birdied two par 5s on the opening day and also made a birdie on the par 3 No. 7 hole that is at 155 yards for this weekend's tournament. Hogan is one shot back of Scott and Braadlie after posting a first-round 76. Hogan had one birdie, 13 pars, three bogeys and one double on Friday. His birdie came on No. 12, a par 3 that played at 191 yards in the opening round. Jansen Smith matched Braadlie for the team lead with three birdies in the first round, but is at 5-over going into the second round after also making three doubles and two bogeys. His three birdies came on three straight holes, starting with a par 5 on No. 15, a par 3 (188 yards) on 16 and then a par 4 at 390 yards on 17. He finished his round with a par on 18.
This weekend's tournament will lead into the Big 12 Conference Championships on April 26-28 in at the Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.
