LUBBOCK, Texas – Several of the NCAA's top leaders visited Lubbock this past week as Texas Tech Athletics hosted the Lone Star State Compliance Summit inside the West Stadium Building of Jones AT&T Stadium.
Â
The one-day summit featured representatives from fellow Big 12 Conference members Baylor, Oklahoma, TCU and Texas as well as in-state counterparts Texas-Rio Grande Valley, SMU, UTEP, North Texas, Texas A&M and UTSA.
Â
In addition, eight members of the NCAA national office attended, including Stan Wilcox, the Executive Vice President of Regulatory Affairs and former Director of Athletics at Florida State University. Wilcox currently serves as the NCAA's second in-command behind President Mark Emmert.
Â
"It was a tremendous honor to host so many of our peers from compliance offices throughout the state this past week," said Jennifer Brashear, Tech's Senior Associate Athletics Director for Compliance Services and Strategic Initiatives. "We can't thank the NCAA staff enough who traveled to Lubbock to discuss several important national issues as well as provide their own guidance."
Â
Wilcox opened the day-long slate of panel discussions that also included presenters focusing specifically on the sports of football and men's basketball as well as immediate eligibility waivers and various experiences serving on national committees.
Â
The summit also included a session on the recent Commission on College Basketball report, giving compliance officials updates regarding reforms in areas of recruiting, agent certification, agent expenses and the NBA Draft.
Â
Brashear closed the summit by moderating a panel to discuss examples of how a department's Chief Financial Officer, Deputy Athletics Director and sport administrator positions can relate to the compliance office in today's environment where additional resources are now permissible to provide student-athletes.
Â
Tech Deputy Athletics Director Tony Hernandez and Senior Associate Athletics Director Jonathan Botros joined Brashear for the panel as the trio highlighted Tech's successes specifically in this area.
Â
"We hope each attendee was able to gain useful information out of each of our panels," Brashear said. "This was a tremendous opportunity for our staff to not only meet our peers from across the region but to also engage in serious dialogue regarding future NCAA legislation. Needless to say, we felt the summit was a huge success."
