The Texas Tech softball team garnered two first-team awards, one second-team honor and a trio of third-team laurels.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Continuing one of the best seasons in program history, a record six student-athletes from the Texas Tech softball team earned National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region recognition on Thursday.
Â
Karli Hamilton and Trenity Edwards were named to the first team, sophomore Erin Edmoundson was placed on the second team and a trio of Red Raiders – Jessica Hartwell, Zoe Jones and Taylor Satchell – earned third-team honors.
Â
The six-player mark eclipsed the program's previous record of four student-athletes in the 2011 season. Tech has now had a player represented on the All-Region teams for ten straight seasons.
Â
"I am so proud and excited for our players and program," head coach Adrian Gregory said. "It isn't often that you get to see your hard work pay off so vividly. To have six All-Region players is a testament to the tireless hours our staff put in recruiting and preparing our student-athletes, who performed extremely well this spring. I am so fired up for our players to get the recognition they deserve."
Â
NFCA CENTRAL ALL-REGION FIRST TEAM
Karli Hamilton – Junior, Outfield
Hamilton, who reigned in All-Big 12 First-Team honors, led the Big 12 during the regular season with 73 hits and a Tech single-season record seven triples. She earned Big 12 Player of the Week recognition three times this season and was one of five Red Raiders honored on the Academic All-Big 12 First Team. The Houston native ranks fourth nationally with eight triples and .15 triples per game and her .424 batting average ranks second all-time in Tech single-season history.
Â
While starting every game as Tech's go-to center fielder, she led all hitters in league play with 29 hits and a .460 batting average. She leads the Red Raiders with 25 multi-hit games and went on a team-best 22 reached-base streak from Mar. 15–Apr. 30. Hamilton posted eight home runs during the regular season, including a grand slam, during the regular season and ranked in the league's top five in runs scored (54), steals (13), total bases (121), on base percentage (.484). Additionally, Hamilton cracked the program's career triples record and leads all Red Raiders with 13 in her three-year career.
Â
Coach Gregory on Hamilton: "No one deserves the honor of First-Team All-Region more than Karli does! She has been working relentlessly for three years to master her craft. She constantly seeks to do whatever it takes for our team. She plays the game extremely hard and with tons of guts. I'm so proud of her and proud for her!"
Â
Trenity Edwards – Sophomore, Designated Player
Edwards made waves in her first season as she led the squad and tied for third in the Big 12 with 14 home runs. As Tech's primary designated player, Edwards racked up 12 multi-RBI games and a team-leading .732 slugging percentage. Edwards collected 42 hits during the regular season and has posted 41 RBI through 53 games. She knocked a season-high three hits against Nebraska (2/8) and Gardner-Webb (3/10) and posted three RBI in four separate games this year. She went on an 11-game hitting streak and 13-game reached base streak and has posted eight multi-hit games in her sophomore season.
Â
Coach Gregory on Edwards: "Since Trenity arrived, she has been an immediate threat. She is such a competitor at the plate and is constantly working on her swing pitch to pitch. She doesn't get cheated at the plate and has come through in big moments again and again! I'm fired up for her and believe she has such a bright future!"
Â
NFCA CENTRAL ALL-REGION SECOND TEAM
Erin Edmoundson – Sophomore, Left-Handed Pitcher
Serving as Tech's ace in the circle, Edmoundson improved from a breakout freshman year to a stellar sophomore season. Edmoundson, who holds a dominating 19-3 record, fanned a career-high 10 hitters and became the seventh Red Raider in program history to toss a no-hitter in her shutout against Drake on Feb. 15. Her only three losses this season came at the hands of Washington, Oklahoma State and top-ranked Oklahoma. She eclipsed her 17-win mark from last year season and moved into fifth in Tech's single season-history. Edmoundson's first home run of her career happened to be a walk-off grand slam against UTEP on March 5 and she tallied two other hits on the opposite side of the plate. Currently, she boasts 149 strikeouts this season and she leads the staff with five shutouts. The Deer Park, Texas, native earned Academic All-Big 12 First-Team honors and ranks sixth in program history with 36 career victories.
Â
Coach Gregory on Edmoundson: "Erin has been a rock for us the past two seasons. She has set the standard on what it looks like to compete on the mound and she never gives in. Erin is such a spark for our team. We would not have had the season we've had without her fire on the mound! I'm so excited for her and the future of our program.
Â
NFCA CENTRAL ALL-REGION THIRD TEAM
Jessica Hartwell – Senior, First Base
Garnering her third NFCA All-Region award, Hartwell carried her record-breaking ways over into her senior season and became Tech's all-time career leader with 48 home runs and 166 RBI in her four years in scarlet and black. The Galt, Calif., native ranked among the league's leaders in runs scored and triples, while ranking fourth with 46 RBI and third with 15 steals. She claimed sole possession of Tech's career home run record against then-ranked No. 12 Oklahoma State and topped the RBI leaderboard against Maine on Mar. 17. Hartwell picked up one Big 12 Player of the Week award during the regular season, was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team and was awarded Academic All-Big 12 Second-Team honors. Hartwell will leave Tech as one of the most decorated student-athletes in program history.
Â
Coach Gregory on Hartwell: "I am so thrilled for Jessica. She has worked so hard and has overcome so much. No one deserves attention more than she does. Our program would not be where it is today without her I'm so proud that she is and will forever be a Red Raider!"
Â
Zoe Jones – Freshman, Second Base
Jones made a lasting impression in her first season both offensively and defensively. The freshman has started all 53 games at second base and has served as a consistent force in the Red Raider lineup. The Mustang, Okla., native collected 44 hits during the regular season – 13 in Big 12 play – and holds the second highest on-base percentage on the team (.457). Two of her four homers came against top-25 teams and the other two were hit off top-75 RPI opponents. Jones has posted 10 multi-hit games and she reached base in 20 consecutive games from Feb. 9–Mar. 16.
Â
Coach Gregory on Jones: "Zoe is such a stud! What a bright future she has. She works her tail off, makes adjustments and has a beautiful swing. I'm so proud of her and super excited for her career!"
Â
Taylor Satchell – Senior, Shortstop
Showing tremendous growth in all aspects of the game, Satchell took over the role of Tech's starting shortstop and started all 53 games at the six-spot. She entered 2019 with two home runs in her career and has sent 10 balls out of the park this season. Satchell has seen drastic improvement at the plate and ties for first on the squad with 12 multi-RBI games. She hit .154 at the plate with just six hits in 2018 and has boosted her average to .324 with 47 hits as a senior. During the regular season, Satchell ranked eighth in the Big 12 in runs scored and RBI, ninth in home runs and 10th overall in slugging percentage.
Â
Coach Gregory on Satchell: "Taylor is such a story of resilience and hope. She has worked so hard in her career for this ONE season! It is so rare for a kid to keep working this hard and I am so glad she is getting to feel the payoff. She is such a special player and I couldn't be more happy for her!
