Sofia Garcia was named to the Arnold Palmer Cup international team Friday morning
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech sophomore golfer Sofia Garcia was named Friday a member of the international team for the Arnold Palmer Cup slated for June 7-9 at the Alotian Cub in Roland, Arkansas.
Â
Garcia was a coaches' selection for the Ryder Cup-style tournament that pits the top collegiate golfers from the United States against the top international players. Her selection was announced during the Golf Channel's The Morning Drive earlier this morning.
Â
Garcia, a native of Paraguay, will be joined on the international team by fellow women's golfers Ana Belac (Duke), Lois Kaye Go (South Carolina), Leonie Hamm (Houston), Jiwon Jeon (Alabama), Agathe Laisne (Texas), Julie McCarthy (Auburn), Lornia McClymont (SRUC Elmwood), Hira Naveed (Pepperdine) and Albane Valenzuela (Stanford). She is the first player from Paraguay to ever participate in the Arnold Palmer Cup.
Â
Garcia becomes the third Tech golfer to be selected for the event as Ivan Ramirez and Sandy Scott will also represent the international team on the men's side. The Arnold Palmer Cup, which began in 1997, is in its second year of being the only major tournament that features men and women playing side-by-side as partners.
Â
After missing the entire 2017-18 campaign injury due to injury, Garcia has returned to form, putting together one of the best seasons all-time for a Red Raider. She has claimed a school-record three individual titles to go with a 71.6 stroke average that is on pace to shatter the single-season mark of 72.3 strokes per round set by Red Raider greats and current professionals Gabby Barker and Kim Kaufman.
Â
Garcia is currently ranked 12th nationally in the latest Golfweek Magazine poll, which leads all Big 12 players entering next week's NCAA Norman Regional. She was listed as one of 15 candidates last week for the Annika Award, which is presented annually to the nation's top female collegiate golfer.
Â
Garcia will headline Tech's lineup next week in Oklahoma as play begins Monday morning from the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club. Tech will be the No. 10 seed in the 18-team field where the Red Raiders will need to finish in the top six in order to advance.
