Sordet Shoots 3-under 2nd Round to Make U.S. Open Cut

PEBBLE BEACH, California – Clement Sordet will play the weekend at the 119th U.S. Open Championship after shooting 3-under-par on Friday at Pebble Beach Golf Links. A Texas Tech student-athlete from 2011-15, Sordet (76-68 – 144) goes into Saturday's round tied for 56th overall at 2-over in his first championship appearance. Â
He will tee off at 10:42 a.m. for his third round paired with Erik Van Rooyen.
Sordet's round of 68 was the third best score of the day, only behind tournament leader Gary Woodland who shot a 65 and Jim Furyk and Patton Kizzire who both carded 67s. Woodland leads the U.S. Open at 9-under, followed by Justin Rose (7-under) and Louis Oosthuizen (6-under).
Sordet was 1-under after nine holes during his second round before making three birdies on the back-9. On his final hole, Sordet drilled a 12-foot birdie putt to finish off his round and dip below the projected cutline at the time. Following his opening round 76, Sordet posted his 68 with five birdies and only one bogey.
Mito Pereira missed the cut after finishing the tournament at 7-over after shooting 77-72 – 149. He was 1-over on Friday after making three birdies and four bogeys. Pereira was 1-under on the back-9 with a birdie on the final hole, a par-5 playing at 535 yards.
Sordet, who qualified last Monday through the Walton Heath Golf Club at the sectional in the United Kingdom, holds the Texas Tech program record with five tournament victories in his career. From Charbonnieres, France, Sordet was named an All-America in his senior season and earned All-Big 12 Tournament honors three times in his career. Sordet tied for the title in the 2015 Lubbock Regional after shooting 67-69-69 – 205 for the Red Raiders with 15 birdies in the 54-hole tournament at the Rawls Golf Course.
He would win five tournaments in his career, including The Carmel Cup in 2011 at Pebble Beach for his first career win.
A Santiago, Chile native, Pereira turned professional after playing for the Red Raiders in the 2014-15 seasons. He is seventh all-time in program history with a 72.2 scoring average and secured All-Big 12 Tournament honors in 2015.
