LUBBOCK, Texas – Clement Sordet and Mito Pereira have qualified to play in the U.S. Open next week at the Pebble Beach Golf Links.
The former Texas Tech players earned spots in the tournament through sectional qualifiers. Sordet secured his first U.S. Open appearance by finishing with six straight birdies and shooting 10-under-par at the Walton Heath qualifier on Monday in the United Kingdom, while Pereira shot 67-68 – 135 for third at the Bowling Green, Florida qualifier at Streamsong. Sordet tied for third at the event after shooting 67-67 – 134 to give the Red Raiders two players in the same U.S. Open field for the first time.
"I'm very excited for Clement and Mito," Texas Tech coach Greg Sands said. "To be playing the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach is incredible and something they will never forget. Both players are having successful professional careers and they are representing Tech Golf at the highest level."Â
The U.S. Open is scheduled to be played from June 13-16 in Pebble Beach, California. Brooks Koepka is the defending champion after winning last year at Shinnecock Hills in New York.
Sordet played for the Red Raiders from 2011-15 and holds the program record with five tournament victories in his career. From Charbonnieres, France, Sordet was named an All-America in his senior season and earned All-Big 12 Tournament honors three times in his career. Sordet tied for the title in the 2015 Lubbock Regional after shooting 67-69-69 – 205 for the Red Raiders with 15 birdies in the 54-hole tournament at the Rawls Golf Course.
He would win five tournaments in his career, including The Carmel Cup in 2011 at Pebble Beach for his first career win. Sordet went on for wins at Oak Hills in 2012, Black Horse Match (2013), Middleburg Bank (2014) and the Wyoming Desert in 2015. Sordet finished the 2014-15 season with a 70.9 scoring average which was the program record until this season when Sandy Scott finished at 70.2. His Red Raider career was also highlighted by being named to the GCAA All-Academic Team and two selections to the Academic All-Big 12 Team. Clement recently finished as the Oman Open runner-up in March on the European Tour.
A Santiago, Chile native, Pereira turned professional after playing for the Red Raiders in the 2014-15 seasons. He is seventh all-time in program history with a 72.2 scoring average and secured All-Big 12 Tournament honors in 2015. At the conference tournament at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Pereira shot 76-74-71-68 – 289 for eighth place for the Red Raiders who finished second. At the 2015 Lubbock Regional, Pereira was 1-under for 14th. Pereira is currently fourth on the PGA TOUR Latinoamerica Order of Merit with six top-10 results in eight tournaments. His third-place finish at Streamsong secured him the final qualifying spot at the sectional that sends three to Pebble Beach.
Kyle Willmann and Andrew Dresser are former Red Raiders who have also played in the U.S. Open with Willmann playing at Torrey Pines in 2008 and Dresser at Pinehurst in 2005.
Along with the U.S. Open, Ivan Ramirez and Scott will be back in competition at the Arnold Palmer Cup International Team this weekend at the prestigious event that will be played at The Alotian Club in Arkansas. The event is scheduled for Friday-Sunday and will be a Ryder Cup-style competition.
