Career in Sports Forum begins Thursday morning at the NCAA national office in Indianapolis
LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech women's basketball graduate Zuri Sanders and junior women's soccer forward Jade King were recently selected by the NCAA to participate in the 2019 Career in Sports Forum, which runs Thursday through Sunday at the NCAA national office in Indianapolis.
Â
The Career in Sports Forum, an annual educational forum, hosts more than 200 student-athletes to learn and explore potential careers in sports, with the primary focus on college athletics. The four-day opportunity is designed to assist student-athletes in charting their own career paths, as well as to provide an opportunity to network and learn from current athletics professionals.
Â
"My experience in this program has meant everything to me." said Sanders. "The high and lows, wins and losses, and lasting relationships that I've built over these four years have convinced me that my impact in this world can span beyond my playing days, whenever they may end. By returning to the realm of athletics, whether that be in the media or at an institution, I can give back to the game that gave so much to me. Opportunities like this forum are going to open the doors for me to be able to successfully do that and for that I'm extremely humbled and grateful."Â
Â
The topics covered at the Career in Sports Forum will include: how personal values intersect with career opportunities, how behavioral styles impact individual effectiveness, the key professional and career development information to assist with transition from a student-athlete to a professional, and the role of the college coach or athletics administrator. Participants will network with peers, as well as key decision-makers at the campus, conference and national level of college athletics.
Â
Both Sanders and King have emphasized how their time as student-athletes and their experience at Texas Tech has led to the desire to pursue a career in athletics.
Â
"It's an honor," King added. "Playing for Tech on the field has been everything and more for me so far, but to be able to go a step further and represent the Double T in a setting like the Career in Sports Forum is an unreal opportunity. I can't wait to come back with new connections and experiences, and a new passion for life after soccer."
Â
Only junior and senior student-athletes are eligible to attend the Career in Sports Forum, which is one of several ways the J.T. and Margaret Talkington Leadership Academy is providing life-changing experience to Texas Tech student-athletes.
Â
The academy most recently led its inaugural Suited for Success Career Tour that gave eight Texas Tech student-athletes the opportunity to learn and network with executives at the likes of the College Football Playoff, the Big 12 Conference and the Dallas Cowboys.
