Red Raiders Shine at U.S. Amateur Championship

Aberg Eliminated in Round of 32
PINEHURST, N.C. – Texas Tech was in the spotlight at the U.S. Amateur Championships this week with rising senior Sandy Scott, sophomore Jansen Smith and incoming freshman Ludvig Aberg advancing to match play at the Pinehurst Resort and Country Club. With the field being trimmed from 312 to 64 after two rounds of stroke play, Aberg advanced to the Round of 32 before falling to William Holcomb V who earned a 1-Up victory with a birdie on the final hole.
Aberg, an incoming freshman from Sweden, is at No. 47 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings which earned him an automatic qualifier for this week's tournament. He opened
Against Holcomb, Aberg made four birdies in the round, including on No. 15 and 16 to tie the match. Aberg and Holcomb both made pars on the par-3 No. 17 before Holcomb made par on the par-4 finishing hole that Aberg would bogey. Holcomb is a Crockett, Texas native who is a rising senior at Sam Houston State.
Aberg advanced to Thursday's round by securing a 1-Up win over Donnie Trosper on Wednesday after advancing to the round of 64 in 12th after two rounds of stroke play (68-73 – 141). Scott shot 67-76 – 143 in stroke play (3-over), while Smith also advanced to match play after a two-round 71-72 – 143 stroke-play total. Scott and Jansen were eliminated on Wednesday with 2&1 losses in the Round of 64.
The Red Raiders will begin their 2019-20 season with fall tournaments at The Carmel Cup from Aug. 30-Sept. 1 in Pebble Beach, California followed by the Iverness Intercollegiate in Ohio (Sept. 23-24), Big 12 Match Play in Houston (Oct. 11-13) and Tavistock Collegiate in Orlando, Florida (Oct. 20-22).
The U.S. Amateur Championship semifinals will on Saturday and the 36-hole championship match on Sunday. The event will be broadcasted on Fox.Â
