Red Raiders Dominate McLennan CC Doubleheader

The Texas Tech softball team got off to a strong start to the fall season thanks to a pair of shutouts over McLennan Community College.
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech softball team dominated the opening day of the 2019 fall season thanks to 10-0 and 15-0 victories over McLennan Community College, Friday evening at Rocky Johnson Field.

GAME 1 – Texas Tech 10, McLennan CC 0
Junior Erin Edmoundson and sophomore Morgan Hornback combined for Tech's first shutout of the day Edmoundson no-hit McLennan with three strikeouts through three full innings before Hornback held off McLennan with four strikeouts in innings four through seven.

Heaven Burton posted Tech's first hit of the fall season in the bottom of the first, but it was not until the second inning that the Red Raiders started pushing across runs. Hits from Bre Russell, Kelcy Leach and Edmoundson plated two runs. Burton, Zoe Jones and Russell all put the ball in play in the third and, as a result of their combined efforts, Tech took a 4-0 lead.

Three more runs came across for the Red Raiders in the bottom of the fourth, where Karli Hamilton, Chloe Cobb and Payton Jackson all scored.

Jackson and Burton scored once more in the bottom of the sixth and freshman pinch-runner Alanna Barraza came around to score in the final fame to clinch the 10-0 victory for the Red Raiders. Â Â

GAME 2 – Texas Tech 15, McLennan CC 0
Game two against McLennan saw even more success as Tech tacked on even more runs. In the circle, Missy Zoch tossed four scoreless innings with five strikeouts before making way for freshman Kamryn Caldwell in the top of the fifth. In her first outing, she recorded one strikeout in each inning and held McLennan scoreless for Tech's second shutout of the day.

Burton scored the Red Raiders first run of the game in the bottom of the first and it was not until the fourth inning that Tech scored again. Shelby Henderson collected a hit and Jackson, her pinch runner, came around to make it a 2-0 contest. Â

The Red Raider offense exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth where all but two members of the Tech lineup crossed home plate.

Tech kept the pressure on the gas pedal and pushed across six runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth to take a commanding 15-0 lead. McLennan was unable to put a single run up through 14 innings.
