September 25, 2019 | Softball
Three Red Raiders collected home runs against the Hawks.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Keeping up with its winning ways, the Texas Tech softball team continued its fall campaign with 5-4 and 7-0 victories over Howard College on Wednesday night at Rocky Johnson Field.
Â
Â
Howard College got off to a quick start after the Hawks loaded the bases on a single and two walks. However, Hornback pitched her way out of the jam thanks to a strikeout and an easy grounder to second base.
Â
In response, the Red Raiders jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first after Peyton Blythe reached base on a single to left field. After the base knock, junior transfer Maddie Westmoreland lifted a two-run homer over the right-center field wall to put the Red Raiders up by two.
Â
Two innings later, Chloe Cobb joined the home run club and pushed Tech to a 3-0 lead with a solo homer that flew over the left-field wall.
Â
The Red Raiders put up two more runs in the fifth and sixth innings thanks to another hit from Blythe and a pair of errors in the field.
Â
Howard College was held off the board until the seventh inning when the Hawks put up four runs on a walk, three hits and a sacrifice fly. Preventing any further damage, Hornback buckled down and ended the game on a grounder back to the circle.
Â
Â
Tech took an early 4-0 lead in the first thanks to big hits from Zoe Jones and Breanna Russell. Senior Karli Hamilton kicked things off with a leadoff walk to start the frame and a steal gave the Red Raiders an early runner in scoring position. Jones brought Hamilton home on a single through the left side and, after freshman Brianna Cantu reached base on a walk, Russell blasted a three-run homer over the left-field wall.
Â
The Red Raiders added their fifth run of the game in the bottom of the second thanks to a one-run homer from Blythe. Two more runs came across the plate in the bottom of the fifth, beginning with a walk to Jones and a Cantu single through the left side. Stepping up in true senior fashion, Shelby Henderson gave the Red Raiders a 7-0 advantage with a two-run single that made its way through the right side of the field.
Â
Between both games, Westmoreland was perfect behind the plate as she caught 3-of-3 runners trying to steal second. Tech finished their final game of the day with 10 hits compared to the Hawks' four.
