The Red Raiders combined for 22 runs and 24 hits against the Bulldogs.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Coming back from a pair of games yesterday, the Texas Tech softball team collected a whopping 24 hits in a dominant 22-0 win over Clarendon College, Thursday night at Rocky Johnson Field.
Â
Erin Edmoundson struck out the side to begin the game and Heaven Burton doubled to left field for the first hit of the game. The Tech defense posted another 1-2-3 inning in the top of the second and sophomore Zoe Jones was plunked by a pitch to start the bottom of the frame. Two batters later, junior Breanna Russell plated Tech's first run of the game thanks to an RBI triple that went sailing over Clarendon's right fielder. With Russell on third, freshman Alanna Barraza stepped up and made it a 2-0 game on an RBI shot straight up the middle.
Â
One pop up and two more strikeouts for Edmoundson sent Tech into the bottom of the third hungry for more runs. Burton led the charge with a leadoff triple to center and junior transfer Maddie Westmoreland brought her home on a shallow single to right field. On two outs, Peyton Blythe blasted Tech's second triple of the inning – the crew's third of the game – and one more run came across to give the Red Raiders a 4-0 lead.
Â
Edmoundson tossed another scoreless frame in the top of the fourth and Barraza moved Tech to a 5-0 advantage thanks to a leadoff home run in the bottom of the inning. Three consecutive hits from Karli Hamilton, Yvonne Whaley, Chloe Cobb made it a 6-0 game.
Â
Westmoreland followed up with a walk and two-RBI double from Jones tacked on two more runs for the Red Raiders. Brianna Cantu plated Tech's ninth run of the game on a long sacrifice fly and Russell pushed Tech to 10 runs on an RBI double down the left-field line.
Â
Leading 10-0, senior hurler Missy Zoch entered the circle in the top of the fifth and held Clarendon off the board for the fifth straight inning. It was in the bottom of the frame that Tech exploded for eight runs against the Bulldogs.
Â
Back-to-back hits from Peyton Jackson and Whaley put two runners on for the Red Raiders and sophomore Morgan Hornback added an 11-run separation thanks to an RBI double that hit off the top of the fence. A passed ball in the next at-bat scored Whaley and Kelcy Leach made it a 13-0 game on an RBI single through the left side.
Â
Olga Zamarripa came in to run for Leach and Blythe snuck a single through the left side to put Tech up by 14. After Shelby Henderson drew a two-out walk, Miranda Padilla distanced Tech's lead even further as she scored Blythe on yet another single through the 5-6 hole. In her second at-bat of the inning, Jackson pushed across Tech's 16th run of the game. A Bulldog error in left let Tech's seventh run of the inning cross the plate and Hornback put the Red Raiders up, 18-0, thanks to a rocket through the left side.
Â
The Tech defense posted yet another scoreless frame in the top of the sixth and Zamarripa belted a standup double to get Tech rolling in the bottom of the inning. An Edmoundson double into center field placed runners in scoring position and Clarendon's second error of the game, as well as a base hit from Padilla, moved Tech to a 20-0 lead. Jackson added two more runs onto Tech's gross lead after she powered a two-RBI double through the left side.
Â
Putting an end to the night's contest, Missy Zoch held on for the shutout and the Red Raiders finished the night with a 22-0 victory over the Bulldogs.
