Skogen, Roller Earn East Lake Cup Wins; Tech Falls to Waves
October 27, 2020 | Men's Golf
ATLANTA – Texas Tech will compete against Texas in the East Lake Cup consolation final on Wednesday after falling 3-2-0 to Pepperdine on Tuesday at the East Lake Golf Club. The Red Raiders and Longhorns will begin their round at 7:30 a.m. (CST) with GOLF Channel coverage beginning at 10:30 a.m. on the final day of the event. Oklahoma will face the Waves in the East Lake Cup championship after earning a 3-2-0 win over Texas in Tuesday's other matchup.
Texas Tech earned a pair of individual match wins on Tuesday with freshman Baard Skogen and JP Roller securing victories. Skogen clinched his win first, taking a 4&3 decision over Pepperdine's RJ Manke before Roller took a 2&1 win over William Mouw.
"It's always close in match play," Texas Tech coach Greg Sands said. "I'm just really proud of the two freshmen who won their matches. That was a great experience for them. They showed a lot of heart out there. There were some, yeah, a little bit of gamesmanship on their part and they didn't back down, especially in my match. Just so that was the one I was with, with JP, and loved how he responded to that and really faced the challenge. He hit some great shots down the stretch."
Roller's win tied the match at 2-2 after Garrett Martin and Markus Braadlie had dropped their matches. At 2-2, Andy Lopez was tied through 16 but would fall 2UP to Dylan Menante.
"It was good. I mean, it's always nice to get a point for the team, that's the most important for today," said Skogen after his win. "Obviously good for the team to get the first point. It was good coaching from the coach, honestly. He gave me some good yardages, gave me some good confidence and I hit some good shots. That was obviously key to have the lead early."
Due to expected weather in Atlanta on Wednesday afternoon, tee times for the final day have been moved up, with matches teeing off between 7:30-9 a.m. utilizing split tees. The consolation matches will go off 10 tee at 7:30 a.m. and championship matches will go off 1 tee. GOLF Channel's live telecast window also has been moved up to reflect the earlier tee times.
Texas earned a 3-2-1 win over the Red Raiders at the Big 12 Match Play Tournament earlier this month in Houston.
Tuesday's match play followed a round of stroke play on Monday to begin the East Lake Cup. Martin led the Red Raiders during the round by shooting 2-under for fourth place, while Skogen eagled his final hole and was at 1-under which put him seventh. The Red Raiders finished as the third seed at 2-under to set up their match against Pepperdine which was second at 3-under. Oklahoma finished first in stroke play at 10-under and Texas was at even-par to set up their 1-4 matchup. OU's Patrick Welch won the individual title at 5-under par for his first collegiate victory.
Following the match, the East Lake Cup presented Roller with the Tom Cousins Award for community service. A freshman from Oklahoma, Roller was recognized for excelling in academics and engagement in the community. Roller, a freshman for the Red Raiders, has taken part in several service projects in his hometown, utilizing golf as a fundraising vehicle for helping others in need. Roller's efforts also led to him being awarded the Jerry Cole Sportsmanship Award in 2019, presented by the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA).
The Tom Cousins Award is named after developer and philanthropist Tom Cousins, who laid out an aspirational blueprint to revitalize the East Lake community of Atlanta by providing cradle-to-college education, mixed-income housing and community wellness to break the cycle of poverty to create a holistic environment. East Lake now acts as a national model for community redevelopment through Purpose Built Communities for transforming a struggling community into a thriving neighborhood.
