LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech men's golf team opens its spring season this week at the Amer Ari Intercollegiate which is a three-day, 54-hole tournament being played on Thursday through Saturday at the Waikoloa Kings' Course in Waikoloa, Hawaii.
The Red Raiders are ranked No. 2 in the nation in Golfstat and No. 3 in the Golfweek team rankings following a historic fall season where they won The Carmel Cup, Inverness Intercollegiate and the Big 12 Match Play Tournament. Individually, senior Sandy Scott comes into the final semester of his senior season ranked No. 5 in the Golfstat national rankings and junior Kyle Hogan is at No. 8. Tech is the only program in the nation with two individual in the top-10 after the fall season. The Red Raiders will be represented by Scott, Hogan, Andy Lopez, Ludvig Aberg and Garrett Martin while Markus Braadlie is playing as an individual in the tournament.
Texas Tech will be competing against No. 3 Georgia Tech, No. 6 Pepperdine, No. 10 Arizona State, No. 21 Auburn, No. 22 Oregon State, No. 25 Texas, No. 27 Stanford, No. 43 Southern Cal, No. 54 Oklahoma State, No. 73 TCU, No. 83 UC-Davis, No. 85 Colorado, CSU-Northridge, Hawaii, Hawaii-Hilo, Osaka Gakuin, Pacific and San Jose State. The Red Raiders won the Amer Ari Intercollegiate in 2017 with Fredrik Nilehn winning the individual title. Oklahoma State is the reigning Amer Ari champion.
Scott, who is also ranked No. 7 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, finished the fall season averaging rounds of 70.0 in three tournaments. A Nairn, Scotland native, he opened his senior year by winning his first collegiate tournament after shooting 14-under-par at The Carmel Cup and is coming off a fifth-place finish at the Tavistock Collegiate where he was at 6-under in the three-round tournament. Along with his play in the collegiate season, Scott competed at the Walker Cup and Spirit International during the fall semester. He was named the Big 12 Golfer of the Month on Nov. 6 following his Carmel Cup victory and is on the Golfweek Final Fall Haskins Award Watch List.
Hogan is coming off a fall season where he finished with an average of 70.3 per round with two third-place finishes. A Cypress, Texas native, he claimed third at the Iverness Intercollegiate after finishing at even-par and then recorded a 7-under at the Tavistock Collegiate to complete the fall slate. Lopez won the Iverness Intercollegiate after shooting 2-under for his first tournament title as a Red Raider after shooting 11-under to finish third at The Carmel Cup. He is averaging 71.0 this season. Aberg, who is a freshman from Sweden at No. 30 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, won the Sun Bowl Golf Classic in El Paso after the fall collegiate season and is averaging rounds of 73.3 in tournament play. His top showing in the fall came at the Carmel Cup. He was named a Hogan Award November Golfer of the Month Finalist after the win in El Paso.
Martin, a freshman from San Antonio, will be playing in his third tournament for the Red Raiders. He had his top showing by finishing fourth at the Iverness Intercollegiate where he was at 1-over and finished fourth. Braadlie is averaging rounds of 72.7 in two tournaments to begin his sophomore season after playing four tournaments as a freshman. A Norway native, Braadlie finished 17th at the Iverness Intercollegiate at 4-over.
The Amer Ari Intercollegiate is the start of a six-tournament spring schedule that will lead into the Big 12 Championship on April 27-29 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Red Raiders will return from Hawaii to compete at The Prestige on Feb. 17-19 in Palm Springs, California.
